The Buzz on Mac Miller (MTV.com)

This hot off the press from MTV.com
Mac Miller getting noticed and on the rise for sure. If MTV supports you… you’re doing something right.
He’s on the come up so hard right now and making so many moves.
Mac Miller is the new face of Rostrum Records.

Most 19-year-olds don’t have a major picked out in college, much less a fully formed career plan. Lucky for us, Pittsburgh MC Mac Miller isn’t like most 19-year-olds.

By the age of 6, the self-taught musician had already picked up piano, guitar, bass and drums. But once he discovered hip-hop in high school, the fledgling rapper honed his freestyling skills and it wasn’t long until he destroyed the competition. Now, backed by Rostrum Records –- the same label that signed Wiz Khalifa –- and combined YouTube video views over the 10 million mark, Miller has become the most popular MC you haven’t heard — yet.

Like Khalifa, Miller built his early career on the strength of a series of mixtapes, starting with 2008′s How High. (Note: Best Day Ever and On and On and Beyond are his most recent releases, and we haven’t stopped listening to them on repeat since they dropped last month.) But, whereas his labelmate primarily rhymes about his love of weed, Miller’s lyrics concentrate on more playful topics like dating, frozen pizza and his sneakerhead obsession.

We’re digging the eclectic use of samples — ranging from My Morning Jacket to Nas to 1960s teen-pop singer Linda Scott — and his musical backdrops, which are reminiscent of mid-90s groups like A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde.

Check out Miller’s videos below, including the 1950s-inspired “Knock Knock” and “Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza.” And a note to future rappers: Everything’s cooler when you have a guy following you around with a giant, old-school boombox. Sayin’.
